McDowell Mountain Ranch is an award winning, 3,200-acre, master-planned community nestled in the foothills of the McDowell Mountains in northeast Scottsdale where the natural beauty and serenity of the mountains, along with the unique ecosystem of the Sonoran Desert, makes for an ideal backdrop for homes.

McDowell Mountain Ranch opened to the public in 1995.  It is made up of 26 distinct neighborhoods, built by 14 different builders, and comprises almost 4,000 homes. Contained within the McDowell Mountain Ranch is Desert Canyon Elementary School and Desert Canyon Middle School. McDowell Mountain Ranch is adjacent to the McDowell Sonoran Desert Preserve. The Scottsdale Arabian Library, a Scottsdale Citizen's Service Center, WestWorld, and the Sanctuary Golf Course are also contained within the community. The city has recently completed an expansive aquatic park, which is also a real draw.

In addition, the community offers a wide variety of social and physical activities for residents, including an impressive and growing calendar of events which includes 25 clubs reflecting varied interests, a wide variety of children's activities, plus numerous community-wide events, classes, and deeply discounted excursions.

There are two shopping centers within The Ranch offering a variety of dining experiences, a large supermarket, and many unique and wonderful shopping and service opportunities

McDowell Mountain Ranch is home to the Sanctuary Golf Course, designed by Randy Heckenkemper.  This championship 18-hole public course lies on the western slope of the McDowell Mountains and is surrounded by native plants and wildlife. Sanctuary attained Audobon Signature Status for the way the wildlife habitat has been enhanced while conservation, water quality, and pest control issues have been handled. The practice facility includes a driving range, putting greens, and pitching/chipping areas.

McDowell Mountain Ranch is located within minutes of the northeast corner of the 101 loop.
